Our Professional, Tony Bacchus
We’d like to introduce you to our club professional, Tony Bacchus. Tony has been a PGA member since 1966 and has been associated with the golf club since 1970.
He started his golfing career as a 14 year old at Holdsworth Golf Club and such was his talent that he reduced his handicap by 10 shots in his first year.
His first job in professional golf was as an assistant to Charlie Chevalier, the club professional at Heaton Moor Golf Club. It was here that Tony benefited greatly from his Charlie’s 50 years of knowledge and experience of the game. It is worth noting that Charlie Chevalier then held the world record of 30 holes in one.
After leaving Heaton Moor Golf Club, Tony joined Peter Wilcock, at the Warren Golf Centre in Bredbury, where he stayed for 2 years.
Although not a regular tour player, Tony played quite a few tournaments in his early years where he learnt a lot, to our benefit, from some great players on the tour including Ryder Cup golfers.
For various reasons, Tony decided to curtail his competition golf and eventually joined Werneth Low Golf Club as the club professional. Initially on a part time basis, Tony combined his club duties with teaching golf at various night schools in Tameside & Glossop.
Tony has now been associated with us for nigh on 38 years, the last 12 years as the full time professional. He is particularly proud of the work he has done in bringing through juniors with over 11 of our juniors having gone on to become full time professionals.
